Her parents wanted to escape the cold, not break into movies. Her father had worked for a locomotive company in Chicago and later took a job at Pathe Film Labs. Her father, brother and uncle were all private pilots.

Janet Surtees’s Education

No reliable record of her schools or degrees is public. He kept telling Jim about Janet, and in 1975 June invited her to dinner to meet him. Janet remembered being startled by his height. After dinner, Arness walked her to her car and asked for her number.

Their First Date

Their first real date came near the end of May. Arness flew them to Mammoth in his Cessna. They bought cheese, salami, bread and drinks, rented horses and rode into Red’s Meadow. When they left, he picked up trash earlier campers had left and carried it out in his saddlebag. Janet decided then that he was a good guy.

Marriage in 1978

They married in December 1978, about three years after meeting. It was Arness’s second marriage; his first, to Virginia Chapman, ended in divorce in 1963. Janet and James stayed married until his death at 88.

James Arness’s Flying Life

Arness earned his pilot’s license so he could leave Gunsmoke locations and make it home for dinner with his kids. He owned a de Havilland Beaver, a rugged bush plane used in Alaska, and landed it on beaches to go surfing in Mexico. Janet grew up around small planes, so flying fit right in.

Life on Set

Janet didn’t visit the Gunsmoke set in its last season because she was working. After the wedding, she joined Arness on set, where the crew was curious about his new wife. Most husbands don’t want spouses around filming, she said, but Jim liked having her there. Once she wandered into the woods hunting arrowheads, and he sent riders out to find her.

The Alamo Storm

While filming The Alamo: 13 Days to Glory in Brackettville, Texas, lightning hit a generator. No one was hurt, but Arness worried the rain would strand the trucks in mud. As their car slid backward on a hill, Janet joked she could already see the headline: “Matt Dillon killed at the Alamo!”

Gunsmoke’s End and a New Role in How the West Was Won

Gunsmoke was canceled abruptly in 1975. Arness thought it could have run longer but accepted it as part of the business. He wasn’t planning another series, since he wanted to give viewers a break. Then How the West Was Won came along, co-created by Gunsmoke writer Jim Byrnes. It wasn’t written with Arness in mind, and he had doubts, but he liked the writing.

Zeb Macahan vs. Matt Dillon

Matt Dillon was Dodge City’s steady lawman. Over one MGM executive’s objections, he chose Bruce Boxleitner to play Zeb’s nephew. Janet says Jim wouldn’t do the show without him, because he felt real chemistry between them. The two became close friends.

Janet and Dennis Weaver

Dennis Weaver played Chester Goode until he left Gunsmoke in 1964, but he and Arness stayed friends. Janet knew Weaver and his wife, Gerry, well, and the two couples often got together. Weaver’s family items later appeared in the 2024 auction, including a mug marked “Dennis from Jim.”

The Gunsmoke Reunion Movies

In 1987, 12 years after the series ended, Arness starred in the first of five Gunsmoke TV movies. Fan mail had kept coming, so he decided to test the waters. Janet’s favorites include the one with James Brolin and Ali MacGraw, and the one with Boxleitner. Janet sold the saddle he used for 20 years of Gunsmoke, along with costumes, boots and mugs. She kept a few pieces, including a statue replica. A few low-quality sites claim she died in 2014, but that contradicts her 2024 interviews.

Janet Surtees today

She remains private, and her public moments are tied to Arness’s legacy. Her last big appearance was the 2024 auction coverage.

Janet Surtees children

She has a son from before her marriage. In 2024 she mentioned children and grandchildren choosing items from the estate, but names aren’t public. There are no documented children with Arness.

Janet Surtees date of Birth

No reliable birth date is published. Dates like February 15 and February 28, 1947 circulate, but without sources, so treat them as unconfirmed.

Final Thought

Janet Surtees didn’t chase fame. She was a dress-shop worker who met Arness through a dinner invitation, and she shared his life for more than three decades. Her interviews give a rare look at the man behind Matt Dillon: a pilot, a surfer, a horseman and a friend to Weaver and Boxleitner.

Much about her remains unconfirmed, including her birth date and net worth. The most useful takeaway is that her story rests on her own words and the 2024 auction, not on the guesswork that fills many websites.

Janet Surtees, also known as Janet Arness, is the widow of Gunsmoke star James Arness, who played Marshal Matt Dillon …

[1

post-3789","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-entertainment","resize-featured-image
["GET
